About us

Small by design.

We're two senior finance professionals with more than 30 years of combined experience.

Why we started

We've spent our careers in senior finance roles at startups, owner-led businesses and large companies, working closely with CEOs, founders and other executives.

We kept seeing the same gap. Growing businesses make their biggest decisions without senior finance help, because a full-time CFO costs too much. We started Techfinance to close that gap.

Why we stay small

We work with a select group of businesses, and we keep it that way on purpose. Every client gets senior people who know their business, quick answers and no hand-offs to juniors. We only take on clients we're sure we can help.

Between us, we have:

  • Led finance at fast-growing companies and owner-led businesses in Canada and the UK
  • Acted as CFO through a venture raise and acquisition due diligence
  • Secured a multi-million-dollar bridge loan and worked on a multi-million-dollar SR&ED claim
  • Built and led a team of accountants serving small businesses

You'll meet us on your free call.

Our promise to you

  • A CPA checks your books and reports before they reach you.
  • The same senior team every month.
  • You see the price before any work starts.
  • No success fees and no lender commissions.
  • Your books and data stay yours and stay private: NDA first, and AI tools that don't train on it.
  • If CRA reviews your SR&ED claim, we're with you through the review.

PROJ-07 · Lighter bracket cracks under loadPERF-412 · Doc parser too slow on CPU
  • Goalp95 latency is 900 ms. Target: under 200 ms on CPU, losing less than 1 point of accuracy.
  • Try 18-bit quantization: 310 ms, but accuracy down 6 points. Not good enough.
  • Try 2Standard distillation: 190 ms, but down 3 points on multi-column pages.
  • ResultKept layout signals during distillation: 180 ms, down 0.8 points.
  • GoalMake the bracket 20% lighter and still pass a 5,000-cycle load test.
  • Try 1Thinner steel: cracked at 3,100 cycles. Not good enough.
  • Try 2Aluminum: the weld cracked at 4,200 cycles.
  • ResultNew rib shape and weld order: 21% lighter, passed 5,000 cycles.
SR&ED claim · project description
Uncertainty
It was not known whether a document parser could run under 200 ms on CPU-only servers while losing less than one point of accuracy. The known methods, quantization and standard distillation, lost too much accuracy on multi-column pages, and published results did not show how to avoid that.
Work done
The team tested 8-bit quantization and standard distillation against a fixed test set. Both missed the target on multi-column pages. It then built and tested a distillation method that keeps layout signals for each page region.
Advancement
The team learned that keeping layout signals during distillation preserves accuracy on multi-column pages: 0.8 points lost at 180 ms, a result the known methods could not reach.
Uncertainty
It was not known whether the bracket could be made 20% lighter and still pass a 5,000-cycle load test. The standard options, thinner steel and a switch to aluminum, both failed, and published data did not show how to stop the weld from cracking.
Work done
The team tested thinner steel and aluminum against the load test. Both failed early. It then designed and tested a new rib shape and a new weld order.
Advancement
The team learned that the rib shape and weld order control where cracks start: the new design was 21% lighter and passed 5,000 cycles, which the standard options could not reach.

Free SR&ED check

How much could SR&ED give you back?

Three quick checks: your refund, whether your work qualifies, and your deadline. Claims are due 18 months after your fiscal year-end, and late claims are denied.

Move the sliders to see what SR&ED could put back in your bank. It takes 30 seconds.

  • 35% back in cash on eligible R&D, on up to $6 million a year, even if you're not profitable yet
  • Ontario adds 8% through its refundable innovation credit
  • A fixed fee, not a cut of your refund. Nothing upfront: it's due when your refund arrives or 180 days after filing

Estimate for a Canadian-controlled private corporation, using CRA's proxy method. US investors are usually fine; a US parent company means no cash refund. Your actual credit depends on eligible work, records and CRA review. Not tax advice.

How the estimate works

It takes R&D salaries (salaries times time on R&D), adds CRA's 55% overhead allowance (capped at your real overhead costs), and adds 80% of Canadian contractor costs. Ontario's 8% credit applies first. The federal 35% refundable credit applies to the rest, on up to $6 million a year. In Ontario, each dollar of R&D salary can return up to about 62 cents. Owners' salaries have extra limits, and the credits shrink for larger or more profitable companies, so we confirm your numbers on the call. The fee is fixed by your yearly R&D spend (R&D salaries plus contractors), not by the refund.

FAQ

Questions owners ask.Questions founders ask.

Who do you work with?
Canadian small and medium-sized businesses, usually with $1 million to $20 million in yearly revenue, and startups from pre-seed to Series A. We work with a select group of clients at a time, so each one gets senior attention. We're based in Toronto and work with companies anywhere in Canada.
Which service should we start with?
Most businesses start with bookkeeping and payroll, so the numbers are right every month. Add CFO days when you want help with budgets, cash, lenders, a big decision or a future sale. If your team spends hours on manual work, start with an automation review.
Which service should we start with?
Many startups start with bookkeeping and a CFO day a month, plus an SR&ED claim, because it often pays for itself. Raising soon? Add CFO days or a fundraise sprint. Use one service, or combine them and save.
How do bundle discounts work?
When you take CFO days, your bookkeeping, payroll and automation cost less: 25% off with 1 CFO day a month, 40% with 2 days and 50% with 4 days. With a monthly automation plan, it's 30%, 45% or 55%. CFO days stay at $1,500 a day. Bundles start with a 3-month minimum, then run month to month with 30 days' notice. The plan builder above shows your exact price.
What is a CFO day?
About 7.5 hours of senior CFO time a month, used when you need it: calls, forecasts, analysis, and board or lender prep. If you need more, we'll tell you early and you can move up a plan.
Why a fractional CFO instead of a full-time hire?
A full-time CFO in Toronto typically earns $204,000 to $323,000 a year, before benefits, bonuses or equity (Robert Half's 2027 salary guide). Most growing businesses need a few days of CFO work a month. One CFO day a month is $1,500, and you can scale up as you grow.
What can you automate?
Most of the routine work: receipts and bills captured and coded, approvals, bank feeds, invoices and payment reminders, payroll syncing, month-end checklists and reports that update themselves. We start with a review of your processes and software ($2,500, credited in full against setup), show you the hours you could save, and quote setup upfront.
Will automation replace our team?
No. It takes repetitive work off your team's plate, so they can spend their time on checking, customers and decisions. Many businesses use it to grow without adding admin staff.
Can you help us get a bank or BDC loan?
Yes, as part of our CFO work. We compare your options, such as a bank loan, a BDC loan, a government-backed loan through your bank (the Canada Small Business Financing Program) or equipment financing. Then we build a lender-ready forecast and financial package and help you answer the lender's questions. We don't negotiate loans for you or arrange mortgages. The lender makes the decision, so no one can guarantee approval, and we never take a fee from a lender.
Do you find investors or take a cut of what we raise?
No. We get you ready to raise: the financial model, the data room, the numbers in your deck and answers to investor questions. We don't sell shares or act as a broker, and we don't charge success fees, so our advice stays on your side.
What is SR&ED?
The Scientific Research and Experimental Development program is Canada's biggest support for business R&D. Canadian-controlled private corporations get a 35% refundable federal credit on up to $6 million of eligible R&D spending a year, paid in cash even with no profit. Ontario companies add an 8% refundable credit.
What kind of work qualifies for SR&ED?
Work qualifies when your team faced a technical uncertainty, tested ideas methodically and learned something new. That can be software, and it can also be new products, materials, processes or manufacturing methods. Routine work with known methods does not. The free SR&ED check gives you a first read, and the free call tells you which projects count.
If CRA cuts my claim, do I still pay?
Yes. The fee is fixed by the work, not by your refund, so it stays the same even if CRA trims the claim. That's why we flag weak projects on the free call and only file work we can defend. The fee is disclosed to CRA on your claim, as the rules require.
When does the SR&ED money arrive?
CRA aims to process claims it accepts as filed within 60 days. If it reviews a refundable claim, its target is 180 days, and we handle the review with you. In CRA's 2025-26 year, 90% of claims were accepted as filed.
We raised from US investors. Can we still get the 35%?
Usually, yes. The 35% refundable credit is for Canadian-controlled private corporations. A US investor with a minority stake doesn't change that on its own. If a US company owns yours (often called a flip), or non-residents together hold most of the votes, the credit is no longer paid in cash. We check your cap table and board on the free call.
We already have an accountant. Can you still help?
Yes. We can work alongside your accountant on CFO work, automation, an SR&ED claim or a loan package, or take over the books when you're ready.
Do you prepare audited or reviewed financial statements?
No. Audits and review engagements need a licensed public accountant. We prepare your books and your lender package. If a lender or investor needs reviewed or audited statements, we work alongside your licensed public accountant, which usually makes their work faster.
Do you run payroll?
Yes. Payroll is $100 a month for up to 5 employees, plus $10 a month for each extra employee. It covers your pay runs, CRA remittances, T4 slips and records of employment. The payroll software is billed to you at cost.
Which accounting software do you use?
QuickBooks Online and Xero, plus the apps around them for bills, receipts, payments and payroll. If you already use one, we pick up where you are. If you use something else, we'll talk about moving on the free call and quote it upfront.
Do your prices go up as we grow?
Only when the work grows. Bookkeeping plans follow your monthly transactions, and if you go over your plan's limit two months in a row, we'll suggest the next plan. You always see a new price before it applies.
Is our data safe?
We sign your NDA before we see anything, keep files in access-controlled storage, and only use AI tools set up not to train on your data. A person checks anything AI drafts.
